Abstract
This chapter critically examines the rapid rise of AI in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching (ELT), arguing that much of the current research is driven more by trends than by solid theoretical foundations. It highlights a key conceptual problem: many researchers mistakenly treat AI as if it were a human language user, applying human-centered linguistic theories to what is essentially a statistical text-generating system. The chapter outlines major challenges, including the lack of human agency, social context, cognitive development, and the instability of AI outputs due to prompt dependency, all of which threaten research validity. Rather than rejecting AI, it calls for a more critical and theoretically grounded approach, encouraging researchers to view AI as a digital artifact and to focus on human–AI interaction, while promoting critical AI literacy to ensure that future research remains meaningful and methodologically sound.
