Abstract

Language is not the only factor that is important in a conversation. Other than language, nonverbal cues such as tone, gestures, and expressions are important in a successful conversation. What about discussions on online platforms? when these actions are not possible for us. Emojis are tools that take the place of these in online conversations, helping people to communicate effectively. This study aimed to analyze the meaning and identify the role of Emojis used by Facebook users on the community Facebook page ‘Palestine’. The researcher uses theories from (Saussure, 1959) and (Evans, 2017) to analyze and identify the meaning and roles of Emojis, respectively. The result of this research shows that certain emoji categories and roles are closely related to one another. The complementing role is the most often used Emojis role, while smileys are the most commonly used Emojis category.
